This 4 1/2 Day Workshop taught by Karen Clippinger, M.S.P.E. presents repertoire that addresses key demands of dance and common imbalances, so that dance performance can be enhanced, and injury risk reduced. Participants will learn repertoire on the mat and Pilates apparatus designed to improve upper back extension, turnout, extensions of the legs, arabesques, knee hyperextension, point of the foot (plantar flexion), ankle-foot stability, jumps, and carriage of the arms. In addition to learning individual exercises, participants will participate in a sample mat class with elastic bands, as well as a sample reformer class.
Participants will have the option of attending in person at BASI Pilates Academy, USA (Newport Beach) or online via Zoom.
A course manual is included and participants will receive a certificate of completion.
Certification Details: Graduates from BASI Teacher Training Programs can obtain a BASI Teaching Certificate with Dance Specialization upon completion of this course. Instructors from other programs are also welcome and will receive a Pilates for Dancers course certificate of completion and 24 NPCP CECs.
• Review key dance-specific strength, flexibility, and technique demands for the spine. • Learn effective strengthening exercises for the abdominals and back extensors utilizing the Pilates reformer, wunda chair, cadillac, and mat. • Develop instructional skills to identify and effectively cue clients to emphasize adequate lumbar flexion, promote supported thoracic extension, limit excessive lumbar hyperextension, and appropriately distribute motion throughout the spine.

• Review key dance-specific strength, flexibility, and technique demands for the hip • Learn effective strengthening exercises for the hip extensors and hip flexors utilizing the Pilates reformer, wunda chair, cadillac, and mat. • Develop effective cues to promote appropriate muscle activation and lumbar-pelvic mechanics to optimize the height of the leg in classic movements to the front and back such as extensions and the arabesque. Learn exercises to promote activation of the deep outward rotators and optimize turnout.
• Review key concepts to facilitate transfer from isolation exercises to functional movement patterns for dance vocabulary emphasizing the hip.
• Learn effective strengthening exercises for the hip abductors and hip adductors utilizing the Pilates reformer, wunda chair, cadillac, and mat.
• Develop effective cues to promote appropriate muscle activation and mechanics to optimize turnout and range of the leg in movements to the side such as plies and developpes.
• Practice exercises and cues for the knee that can be utilized to control knee hyperextension and encourage good hip-knee-foot alignment.
• Participate in a mat class designed for dancers utilizing elastic bands for resistance.
• 2pm – 5pm
• Review reformer exercises covered in the course so far.
• Review the importance of proprioception and balance for dancers.
• Learn exercises for the ankle-foot complex that develop strength and proprioception.
• Learn select strengthening exercises for the upper extremity utilizing the Pilates reformer, cadillac, and mat that are key for achieving dance aesthetics and can be used to complement classic Pilates exercises.
• Discuss several program design options for dancers.
