Frequently Asked Questions

The following information helps explain some commonly asked questions about the Body Arts and Science International Pilates Educational Programs.

I just started Pilates 1 – 2 months ago. Am I a good candidate for participating in the BASI Comprehensive Teacher Training Program or do I need more experience?
For the Comprehensive Course, we recommend a minimum of 1-year Pilates experience as well as movement background and anatomy knowledge.

For the Mat Course, we recommend a minimum of six months Pilates experience.

Am I required to purchase the Movement Analysis Workbooks?
We strongly recommend the Workbooks as an excellent supplement to the Study Guide and your education, however they are not required.

How many hours of self-practice are expected of me?
Although there are no set hours, you should practice on a regular basis throughout the course. To truly learn this work, you must feel it repeatedly in your own body.

Am I required to take lessons from a BASI certified trainer?
While we strongly recommend that you take lessons from a BASI certified trainer to ensure good form in your practice, it is not required.

Will I received a discount if I take lessons from a BASI certified trainer at the Host studio?
Student discounts are at the discretion of the Host studio. Please ask your Host.

I have been teaching Pilates for more then one year. Am I required to complete 100 Observation hours?

I am not able to make it to the studio during official open studio hours. What can I do to practice?
Talk to your Host about additional options and explore availability with other BASI studios in your area. You can also contact our Affiliate studios which are listed on our website. Please note that if you practice at non-BASI studios, the repertoire or teaching may differ from the BASI style. However, we accept practice hours from any Pilates location.

What is the format of the midterm and final exams?
Written:  Multiple choice, true and false, short answers
Practical: Demonstration of exercises

Certificate Evaluation:  One hour private Pilates lesson taught by you and observed by a BASI faculty member.  Your grade is based on your teaching skills and use of the BASI Block System®.

What happens if I can't make it on the day of the exam?
You can make up the written midterm exam at any time throughout the course. You must schedule an exam time with your Host studio. If you miss the midterm practical exam, a makeup exam is not required. In this case, your final practical score will count twice.
