Program Requirements & Examination Process

To complete your certification follow the steps below:

  • Attend all course modules
  • Complete the required Student Hours*
    • Observation: Observe Pilates teachers** in a studio or online (up to 50% online)
    • Self Practice: Take sessions with a BASI teacher, self practice, and practice with fellow students
    • Student Teaching: Teach in a studio
  • Pass the online multiple-choice exam(s)
    • Pass the final examination (Centralized Testing) which includes****:
    • Teaching evaluation***
    • Practical demonstration

* Students can begin accumulating hours after attendance of the first course module.  Students may use their Host Studio or any other Pilates studio with permission (fees may apply). Mat repertoire can be practiced and taught anywhere, even at home. 

** Observing BASI teachers is highly recommended.

*** Clients will be assigned for teaching evaluations in studio. They will be of an intermediate-level with minimal to no physical restrictions. Feedback will be given after the exam. Final results will be posted in the BASI Portal within 30 days following the exam.

**** Assessment Policy:  All teaching and practical exams are carefully evaluated by our experienced examiners. To maintain fairness and consistency across all assessments, exam results are considered final and are not open to appeal. We appreciate your understanding and trust in the integrity of the process.

Requirements By Program

Mat Program Requirements

  • Attended Course: Mat, Mat & Reformer, Foundation, or Comprehensive.
  • One Online Multiple Choice Exam
  • Student Hours: A total of 85 hours
    • 15 hours of Observation
    • 30 hours of Teaching
    • 40 hours of Practical training
  • Final Evaluation*
  • In-studio/Online via Zoom
    • Teaching Evaluation – Instruct four exercises to a volunteer client. For Zoom exams, students are required to provide their own volunteer client. 
      • Practical Exam – Demonstrate proficiency in four separate Mat Pilates movements. Movements will be randomly chosen from Modules 1 to 6 (Flex Modules 101-104).
  • Self-Recorded Online
    • Teaching Evaluation- Conduct a 30 minute Mat session for a volunteer client, following the BASI Block System and using repertoire taught within the course modules. Students are required to provide their own volunteer client.
      • Practical Exam – Demonstrate proficiency in ten separate Mat Pilates movements. Movements will be randomly chosen from Modules 1 to 6 (Flex Modules 101-104).

*Offered in three different formats. Students have the option to choose between In-Studio, Online via Zoom or Self-Recorded Online.

 

Mat & Reformer Program Requirements

  • Attended Course: Mat & Reformer, Foundation, or Comprehensive.
  • One Online Multiple Choice Exam
  • Student Hours: 225 hours in total
    • 45 hours of Observation
    • 90 hours of Teaching
    • 90 hours of Practical training
  • Final Evaluation*
    • In-Studio
      • Teaching Evaluation – Conduct a one-hour Mat and Reformer session for a volunteer client, following the BASI Comprehensive Block System and using repertoire taught within the course modules. 
      • Practical Exam – Demonstrate proficiency in four separate Pilates movements. Movements will be randomly chosen from Flex Modules 101-104. 
    • Self-Recorded Online:
      • Teaching Evaluation – Conduct a one-hour Mat and Reformer session for a volunteer client, following the BASI Comprehensive Block System and using repertoire taught within the course modules. Students are required to provide their own volunteer client.
      • Practical Exam – Demonstrate proficiency in ten separate Pilates movements from the program. Movements will be chosen randomly from Flex Modules 101-104.

*Offered in two different formats. Students have the option to choose between In-Studio or Self-Recorded Online.

 

Comprehensive Program Requirements

  • Attended Comprehensive course
  • Complete two online multiple choice exams
  • Student Hours: 500 hours in total
    • 100 hours Observation
    • 200 hours Student Teaching
    • 200 hours Self Practice
  • Final Evaluation*
    • In-Studio
      • Teaching Evaluation – Conduct a one-hour Comprehensive session for a volunteer client, following the BASI Comprehensive Block System and using repertoire taught within the course modules. 
      • Practical Exam – Demonstrate proficiency in four separate Pilates movements. Movements will be randomly chosen from Modules 1 to 12 (Flex Modules 101-108).
    • Self-Recorded Online:
      • Teaching Evaluation – Conduct a one-hour Comprehensive session for a volunteer client, following the BASI Comprehensive Block System and using repertoire taught within the course modules. Students are required to provide their own volunteer client.
      • Practical Exam – Demonstrate proficiency in ten separate Pilates movements from the program. Movements will be randomly chosen from Modules 1 to 12 (Flex Modules 101-108).
