Program Requirements & Examination Process

To complete your certification follow the steps below:

  • Attend all course modules
  • Complete the required Student Hours*
    • Observation: Observe Pilates teachers** in a studio or online (up to 50% online)
    • Self Practice: Take sessions with a BASI teacher, self practice, and practice with fellow students
    • Student Teaching: Teach in a studio
  • Pass the online multiple-choice exam(s)
  • Pass the final examination (centralized testing) which includes:
    • Teaching evaluation***
    • Practical demonstration

* Students can begin accumulating hours early on in the process.  Students may use their Host Studio or any other Pilates studio with permission (fees may apply). Mat repertoire can be practiced and taught anywhere, even at home. A maximum of 10 observation hours is allowed before Module 1.

** Observing BASI teachers is highly recommended.

*** Clients will be assigned for teaching evaluations. They will be of an intermediate-level with minimal to no physical restrictions. Feedback will be given after the exam. Final results will be posted in the BASI Portal within 30 days following the exam.

Requirements By Program

Mat Program Requirements

  • Attended Course: Mat, Mat & Reformer, Foundation, or Comprehensive.
  • One Online Multiple Choice Exam
  • Student Hours: A total of 85 hours
    • 15 hours of Observation
    • 30 hours of Teaching
    • 40 hours of Practical training
  • Final Evaluation
    • Teaching Evaluation: Instruct four exercises to another student.*
    • Practical Exam: Demonstrate proficiency in four Mat movements.

 

Mat & Reformer Program Requirements

  • Attended Course: Mat & Reformer, Foundation, or Comprehensive.
  • One Online Multiple Choice Exam
  • Student Hours: 225 hours in total
    • 45 hours of Observation
    • 90 hours of Teaching
    • 90 hours of Practical training
  • Final Evaluation
    • Teaching Evaluation: Conduct a one-hour Mat and Reformer session for an assigned client, following the BASI Block System and using repertoire taught within the course modules.*
    • Practical Exam: Demonstrate proficiency in four separate Pilates movements from the program. Movements will be chosen randomly from Modules 1 to 6 (Flex Modules 101-104).

 

Comprehensive Program Requirements

  • Attended Comprehensive course
  • Complete two online multiple choice exams
  • Student Hours: 500 hours in total
    • 100 hours Observation
    • 200 hours Student Teaching
    • 200 hours Self Practice
  • Final Examination
    • Teaching Evaluation: Design and teach a one-hour session for an assigned client, following the BASI Block System and using repertoire taught within the course modules
    • Practical Demonstration: Demonstrate proficiency in four separate Pilates movements – one from the Mat repertoire and three utilizing various Pilates apparatus. Movements will be randomly chosen from Modules 1 to 12 (Flex Modules 101-108).
